ABOUT YOU

Years ago a visitor asked me how to get into the hospital. I answered, you walk in. That is no longer true, but it is true of the villages. Drive outside the city to a town. The villages will be a bit farther, maybe down a side street. Drive to the end of the paved road. If there is a dirt road, follow it. If you find a smaller village with mud-brick houses and roofs made of non-roofing materials, stop. You have arrived at your destination.

You'll need a translator. Other than that, it's all up to you.

When we first began working in villages the people were not surprised. Churches, charities and local governments provide help; the people are used to that. What surprised them is that we stayed. People who bring stuff leave after they have given out the boxes and taken some photos.

If you stay you have a good chance of making real changes. Everyone leaves, which makes no sense: there is an endless list of things that need to be done to make you into the person God wants.

You have to stay. If you leave before you've been thinned to the finest thread, you'll miss out on everything.
